Join in: City Of Fools

January 2014. Photographer Paul Brouwer and assembly artist Jacqueline Grubben visit Lanzarote. Are the luxury bungalows they saw under construction three years earlier finished? Occupied? The answer is both upsetting and inspiring. Instead of laughing children swimming in their pools, decay moved in. Destruction. Graffiti. Depicting an interesting worldview. A new reality had emerged. Paul Brouwer photographed and Jacqueline Grubben collected materials for her assemblies. Together the pieces of art form project City of fools, their first joint exhibition in which they tell their story by means of a three by one square meters art project. City of fools will be on display from June till August 2014 in Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo, as part of Join in: Muur te huur.

InnPulse: The taste of the aftermath

In de Week of the Taste the photo exhibition The taste of the aftermath by Paul Brouwer will open on the 16th Floor of Innovatoren in Venlo, the Netherlands. The taste of the aftermath will be opened on Saturday September 28 by Twan Beurskens, delegate for the Province of Limburg and closely involved with Innovatoren and Venlo Greenport Campus. The exposition will be open untill 24th November.

In this project Paul Brouwer compares the heartbeat, the pulse, with the dynamics caused by human presence in a building and its surroundings.  What happened after the visitors of Floriade left and before the visitors of the Week of the Taste came? For Paul Brouwer, the quiet is the ultimate aftermath. He leads the viewer around in asking wat is left after a building is abandoned. What happens after the vacancy? Does nature take over? Or is it something else? And what echoes from the enormous dynamics that once were? The exposition is a mix of photo’s of left overs from the last Floriade (2012/2013, Venlo, The Netherlands) and photo’s made earlier in other parts of the world. At the end, the beholder will create his own brand new tale.
